Senate committee raises alarm over oil tanks

The Senate Committee on Maritime Transport has frowned at the siting of petroleum products tank farms within the ports. It said the damage an accident from one of the facilities, could cause the country would be incalculable if the Federal Government fails to take precautionary steps.

It, however, lauded the Federal government’s efforts in repositioning the seaports to become a hub in West and Central Africa. Speaking after a tour of ports’ facilities in the Southwest by the committee, its Chairman, Senator Zaynab Kure, said the government needs to adopt measures to avert problems over the tank farms’ siting at the Lagos ports.

Senator Kure, who was with Senators Oluremi Tinubu,  Joshua Dariye and Kabiru Gaya, said the committee would make recommendations to the Federal Government in repositioning the ports for growth and development.
