Tribunal dismisses LP’s petition against Senator Tinubu

The Legislative Election Petition Tribunal in Lagos yesterday dismissed the petition filed by the Labour Party (LP) challenging the election of Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu as Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District and her party, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

The tribunal held that it lacked jurisdiction and hinged its decision on the recent Supreme Court judgment, upholding the provision of the Electoral Act that all election petitions should be concluded within 180 days.

The tribunal had scheduled judgment for March 5, after it retried the petition in compliance with last year’s decision by the Court of Appeal, Lagos that the petition, earlier dismissed on technical ground, be heard on merit.

But the tribunal reconvened yesterday, invited parties and delivered its judgment in view of the judgment by the Supreme Court.
