I felicitate with all Nigerians as well as the federal and various state governments on the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day.
Like in previous years since 1999, May 29th is another public holiday in commemoration of Nigeria’s return to democratic rule, after several years of military interregnum. It is a poignant reminder of our struggle as a Nation and what it took to get us to where we are today; a reminder of the sacrifice and sweat of those who labored to ensure the rebirth of democracy in the land.
In light of this, today’s celebration is a call to cherish and protect within the bounds of the law, the democracy for which several of our compatriots paid the supreme price. It is also a call to remember and pray for these heroes of democracy.
Though young, our democracy is growing. It is my belief that if we continue to nurture it, tolerantly making amends as we go on, Nigeria will one day be a reference point for good governance.
As this celebration is in the build-up to the 2019 elections, I want to urge us all to be vigilant, refusing to be polarised along ethnic or religious lines; and ensuring that we do not permit the thwarting of that which we have all laboured for.
Beyond our vigilance is the need to get involved. We must use the work-free day to register to vote; and collect our Permanent Voter Cards as part of the requirements for exercising our civic responsibility.
Above all, I must today, urge our youth to not allow themselves be used to incite violence. Nigeria belongs to us all, and if we persist and nurture her, she will get better!
Once again, I congratulate the good people of Lagos Central Senatorial District, Lagos State, Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora and pray that we all enjoy the dividends that come with democracy.
